Sat thinking, as the conversation continued around him, wondering about mages abd whether this entire plot was even the slightlest as plausible as it sounded. Finally, he looked at Leto once again.

"I don't understand. Why die...why risk everything for well..Vlad?? What motivates you, Leto? You can't have just woken up and decided you were going to save the realm...did you???"

Chose to argue this for a moment, to test how sure Leto really was.

"Hmm..but surely Bathory would not have married him if she did not want him there? Trust me, there's many she's been engaged to and never damn married, ask Kharne. Surely SHE wouldn't put the realm at risk. Don't you trust her judgement?"

"I do trust Bathory's judgement, and I think that in order for her to actually go through with it, the realm must have been in need of financial assistance. Look at the party in Grorr - does that look like two people getting along to you? My belief is that the marriage was of necessity, not because Vladimir is trustworthy."

he rests his hands on the table. "I know no mages that we could rely on in this situation. Rensain is very questionable, but is perhaps our best bet, given the circumstances. we'll just need to be prepared for the double cross. he has much to gain or lose, either way it turns out."~

"The poision most definately does not sound pleasant. As for Rensain, perhaps he could be bought, though as you say it is a great risk. If he agreed, one of us would need to be near him at all times to ensure no treachery - but if he declined, we would have to kill him to prevent work reaching the baron."

he looks at Jared. "she will not jeopardize her own power or life, regardless of the realm. she functions on the same levels as Vlad, a creature of instinct."~

What then? Even worse, say Jaric finds out, and has troops on our doorstep. What then? How would we get him to back off when we've just killed his brother?"

"I really think Jaric would see it as an act of self defense - as an Auroran he has no right to internal Aegian affairs - his sense of honor should overpower his desire for revenge - at least until things have calmed down."

"I'd imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to draw the Queen away from the palace, we coul dhave someone set up a meeting elsewhere, which I don't think would be too difficult. If you have men you'd rather use, as a gesture of my trust, I will agree to this, and only supply my men if you so wish."

"besides, if this succeeds, and I'm not dead, I will deal with jaric. I have before. he knows me, and as a fellow Auroran, I feel he may put a little more stock in me. besides, he doesn't strike me as being too fond of the rest of you." he chuckles.

he looks to Leto. "no. your men will suffice. I did not mean to imply otherwise. but that when it comes to matching Blades with Vlad himself, there are some who would stand with us, who are capable."~

It was your idea and will remain so, but someone who is older and KNOWS Vlad might be more suited to the plan. I'm not yet satisfied that everything has been thought out."

"I don't know..Vlad might be a vindictive asshole, but whats my reason for killing him? I just don't happen to like the way he plays his games? Hell, so long as he keeps plugging his money into Aegis, shouldn't that be enough? I dunno...I need to make sure I don't have any doubt. Vlad knew me since I was a kid. I need to get over that. Don't think me a traitor, this is a lot to stomach for one evening."

he looks around. "I can't say I'm a leader, my friends. I've known him, a very long time, yes. but so has Kharne. I suppose, we should perhaps put our heads together in this."~

"Im glad that you see what I see Ralean. That fact alone makes me feel a thousand times better. And as for a leader, maybe you are right, if we are united in this cause, we should be working together anyway. Once we have ironed out a plan, we will have no real need for a leader anyway, save for the purposes of accountability, which I have already said I will take responsibility for."

Kharne sighed quietly from his place near the wall, his eyes closed as they had been through the entire conversation. They opened now and regarded Leto without expression.
"There are a lot of shadows here Leto. A brightly lit room would have been far better."
He moved to the table and sat, though did not relax.
"You say that Vladimir could have anyone killed on a whim. I say that he could have done that, and probrably did, before taking the throne. Nor is he the only ruler in history that is that dangerous to the general populace. In fact, he's most likely less dangerous to them because they're useles to him except for making more subjects to serve and pay taxes."
He steepled his fingers and looked from one to another slowly.
"Don't get me wrong I think he's as devious a bastard as any I've known, and then some. Whatever you plan he'll be three steps ahead of you. I can almost admire that, almost."
He remained careful to keep his face a mask.
Besides, before I even think of planning his unfortunate demise I want my daughter out from under the same roof. he thought to himself.

"I tried to keep this as low profile as possible, hence the darkness. I'll bear what you said in mind next time."

(He pondered things over for a moment before continuing)

"Don't think that I'm asking for immediate action now Kharne, I know that this has a long way to go in terms of planning. The purpose of this meeting was to see if you would be interested in helping - which I still hope you all will. As Ralean said, there is much still to do, and with a little more time and planning, we can cover as many loose ends on our side of the plan as possible. I know that I ask a great deal - but I genuinely think the ends justify the means here."
