Dear Mara,

My wife and I have always had conflict but this time I think it may have gone too far. She said she wanted a baby from me, and I am not sure its what I can give her.

Others will see it as a weakness they can use against me, and I do not deny it that I agree.

However, my wife cried when I told her this. She wants our child and she wants to be happy. I was shocked, she had never spoken of such before and has previously said that she hates me.

I told her that I wasn't sure, and she was upset - very distressed. I told her I loved her regardless but I knew I had unintentionally hurt her.

Now she's gone, she's left. I suppose I deserve this, don't I?

Dear Distressed,

First let me say I'm sorry for your pain. It is a very difficult situation and it sounds to me like your wife is not the only hurting.

You say your wife has left. Has she left you, or simply gone off for a while? Often women seek out the comfort and company of female friends and family when something of this nature happens. If that is so, she will return when she's had time to process her hurt and disappointment.

If she has left you, there are several things you have to decide. Do you want her back? Just what will you do to show her she should return? Which is more important - your wife and her desire for a family or your career and the opinions of others?

If you are physically incapable of producing a child, there are several options for you to explore - magic and adoption being the most obvious.

Finally, no one deserves to be hurt. Perhaps past actions lead to future hurt, but no one inherently deserves emotional pain. You have several decisions to make and I wish you luck...
